Gravel Rides Northumberland

Gravel Rides Northumberland showcases 15 of the best gravel bike rides across North East England. From 10 to 104 kilometres in length and covering a variety of terrain, there is something for every gravel cyclist.

From the gentle beauty of the Reiver Trails and South Tyne Trail to the wild uplands of Kielder and the Cheviots, Gravel Rides Northumberland captures the region’s full variety. Riders can enjoy peaceful commons, hidden forests and rolling valleys, with everything from easy lowland spins to remote and challenging routes through the most dramatic and rewarding landscapes of Northumberland and the North Pennines.

Researched, ridden and written by local author Jordan Matthews, the routes feature clear and easy-to-use Ordnance Survey maps; easy-to-follow directions; details of distance, timings and difficulty gradings; stunning action photography; refreshment stops and local knowledge; and a detailed appendix. Also included is a link to downloadable GPX files.

Jordan Matthews has been riding and racing bikes in the North East all his life. He has devised hundreds of routes in the region, and has become something of an expert in gravel cycling in Northumberland and the North Pennines. There aren’t many roads, bridleways or tracks he hasn’t ridden in the area. He has worked in the bike industry since he was 16, as a bike builder in a shop, a mechanic at Recyke y’Bike, a cycling charity, and then for an adaptive cycling charity, working with people with disabilities. From 2021 to 2023 he was Cycling UK’s Cycling Development Officer for the North East region, working with community cycling clubs in the area, and he later worked for the North East Combined Authority as an active travel officer, working alongside the seven local authorities, including Northumberland, to help them deliver their active travel plans for the region. He now works with a gravel cycling events company as events manager for the North of England and Scotland, organising and running over 20 events each year. His writing has appeared in Cycle magazine and he contributed routes and advice to Huw Hennessy’s book Cycling in Northumbria (Bradt, 2023). Gravel Rides Northumberland is his first book.

UK Delivery

We offer FREE standard UK P&P for orders: orders are sent Royal Mail Second Class as standard and should arrive within two to three working days. The option to upgrade UK shipping to Royal Mail 24 Next Day Delivery is available at checkout.

International Delivery

International orders are sent by Royal Mail International Tracked. Deliveries can take between a few days and a couple of weeks to arrive, depending on the delivery location. Please contact us if your country is not listed.

Dispatch

Update: September 2022. Most orders received through the Vertebrate Publishing Adventure Books website are dispatched from Gardners in Eastbourne, UK; some orders (such as signed copies of pre-orders, or limited stock items) are sent from our office in Sheffield, UK. If your order is for multiple items, you may receive more than one package, though we try to avoid this (if applicable, you would only be charged once for shipping). Orders received before 11 a.m. are dispatched the same day; orders received after 11 a.m. are usually dispatched the following business day. You will be sent a notification email when your order has been dispatched. If we are temporarily out of stock of a title we will advise by email.

Payment is made safely and securely using Shopify, which incorporates the world's leading payment gateways, including Stripe, Apple Pay and Google Pay. You can also check out with PayPal. All payments are handled directly by these payment gateways and Vertebrate Publishing Adventure Books does not process or store any cardholder details on the Adventure Books website.

Returns

We will happily refund or exchange any item that is returned to us in an unused, as new condition. If you want to make a return, contact us with your details. Once we've received the item(s), we will credit your account. If the item is faulty or damaged or we have sent the incorrect item we will refund postage.

If you're returning something because it's not suitable, you'll need to pay the postage costs to return it to us. We process most returns the day they arrive with us, and certainly within seven working days. Goods must be returned to us within 21 days.
