Those of you who are avid VP blog readers may remember some time back we celebrated the publication of all six of Eric Shipton’s mountain-travel books, releasing them as ebooks for the very first time. In aid of the celebrations, we managed to steal a moment with John Shipton – Eric’s son – to get some inside info on the legend himself.
Today, we are delighted to announce publication of That Untravelled World,Shipton’s autobiography. One of the greatest adventurers of the twentieth century, Eric Shipton was a pioneering explorer, journeying to places that did not feature on maps and to unexplored mountains, such as the High Dauphiné.
Filled with anecdotes from different periods of his life, Shipton takes us on his journey from Kilimanjaro and Mount Stanley alongside Tilman, his discovery of the route to the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, summiting Mount Kamet with mountaineering icon Frank Smythe, and multiple expeditions to Everest. He writes beautifully, with wit, humour and sensitivity.
MD Jon Barton likes it because ‘it’s important to record these fantastic, trailblazing accounts – they could so easily be lost forever, but it’s because of people like Shipton that mountaineering is what it is today. It’s an awe-inspiring story, told with candour and humility.’
So, here’s to the life of a pioneering mountaineer and explorer. If you didn’t get to read John Shipton’s interview before, you can still find it here.
That Untravelled World is available in ebook and print on demand (paperback) formats.
