Preet Chandi's tips for planning a big expedition
In 2022 Preet completed a solo expedition to the South Pole and in January 2023 recorded the longest solo and unsupported polar expedition.

Here are some top tips from Preet to help with the planning of your next big expedition

→ Speak to people who have done the same thing before, something similar or even just a big expedition. Listen to blogs, read articles about their trips, follow them on social media – not in a stalker-ish way(!), but you can get a lot of good tips. I contacted everyone I could who had been to Antarctica. You don’t know what you don’t know and you don’t always know what questions to ask, so these conversations can be really useful.

→ Work out your budget and your options – funding part yourself, sponsorship, fundraising. I wouldn’t wait on this one. This was one of the hardest and most time-consuming parts, so get going with it. I emailed ten to fifteen companies a night for sponsorship for nearly a year.

→ If you need to do physical training, train smart. It doesn’t have to be the hardest thing every day – relate it to your expedition. Just be consistent.

→ Don’t forget logistics. How are you going to get there? How much will that cost? What kit do you need? Can you borrow any kit? Make sure you know your kit – if anything breaks, do you know how to repair it?

→ Think about your food. Work out what you need to carry, whether you’ll need resupplies on route, how you will cook. Take food you like the taste of. There’s nothing worse than trying to force yourself to eat something you don’t like!

→ Don’t panic! It might feel overwhelming when you start looking into a big expedition. It did for me. I found breaking it down easier; just take it one step at a time. You’ve got this.
