Jasmin Paris blocking the gate at the finish of the Barkley Marathons
The 2024 Barkley Marathons. Less than two minutes to go. The sixty hour cut off is very nearly up. Around the world, ultra running fans are frantically refreshing X, WhatsApp messages of hope are bouncing off servers, one question… can she do it? A cry goes up, Jasmin Paris appears on the track, a wintry forest behind. At 59 hours 58 minutes and 21 seconds the clock stops, Jasmin is the first woman to ever complete the Barkley Marathons. A new chapter has just been written in the history of long-distance running. The 2024 Barkley Marathons will never be forgotten, and – with your help – will soon be immortalised in an exclusive photography book.

David Miller, British Photography Awards People’s Choice Sports Photographer 2023, spent a week at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee photographing the legendary 2024 Barkley Marathons. David aimed to document the race and the racers exclusively in monochrome using a Leica Q2 Monochrom, specifically purchased for the trip.

The result was some 6,000 images, one of which – Jasmin Paris slumped under the gate, blocking the gate – will go on to be one of the most iconic sport photographs of all time. David has now edited his selection from that time in the park – who was there, what they were doing, the triumphs, the pain, and the joy of the Barkley Marathons. He would like to share this collection in a unique, hardback special volume of photographs alongside some text to capture the spirit of the event. This is a Kickstarter crowdfunding project that allows you to be part of the 2024 Barkley Marathons.
Ultra-running is a niche within a niche sport, and no event is more niche than the Barkley Marathons. So while we know it is important to us, we really don't know how important it is to you, and we simply don't know if people want to own a permanent reminder of what happened in that race. If the project is supported – if it is wanted – it will happen. If it isn’t, it won't.

If supported, the book will feature 200 photographs, 90% of them never before published. 2% of profits will be donated to The Green Runners, a running community co-founded by Jasmin Paris, making changes for a fitter planet.
Do Not Block Gate a beautiful and inspiring book of photographs and stories from the historic 2024 Barkley Marathons. The project is a collaboration between photographer David Miller and publisher Vertebrate Publishing. This premium-quality book of carefully curated photojournalism will bring you closer than ever before to some of the Barkley Marathons’ most incredible stories, including the runner who came within a single book page of completing the race, a momentous and historic changing of the guard, and a winner whose nation has been torn apart by war. Pledging your support and owning this book is your opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the global ultra-running community and revel in the unmistakable atmosphere of its most idiosyncratic and fabled event.

All editions will be printed to the highest quality, and case bound in cloth with silver foil blocking and finished with a gloss dust jacket. The special editions, with specified pledges, include printed slipcases and a limited-edition print of Jasmin finishing her iconic race.
