Job advert: production editor (fixed term)

Vertebrate Publishing is an award-winning independent publisher. We publish books to inspire adventure, and it’s our rule that we only publish books that we want to read or use ourselves.

We have an opportunity for a skilled and motivated production editor to join our team in Sheffield on a fixed-term basis – minimum three-month contract, with potential for extension. The production editor will primarily assist the production team in the preparation and production of guidebooks.

Day-to-day tasks for this role include:

• author, book contributor and freelancer liaison
• editing and proofreading of manuscripts
• preparation of manuscripts and supporting materials, such as mapping and photography, for layout
• assisting with the production of digital book products

We are looking for an applicant with demonstrable experience of working in a book production environment who is available at short notice and can get up to speed very quickly. We are specifically looking for someone who has:

• several years of experience in a publishing environment, working in book production
• experience of managing projects from inception to completion
• copyediting and proofreading experience; experience of Word styles an advantage
• experience of working with photography and mapping for publication
• some digital publishing experience (ebooks)
• a meticulous attention to detail
• excellent English language skills, written and verbal
• excellent organisational and administrative skills
• an ability to work on their own initiative
• a positive, friendly and professional attitude.

An interest in the great outdoors is desirable.

This is a full-time position, ideally based in our Sheffield office; remote or hybrid working will be considered for the right candidate. Immediate start preferable.

Salary: competitive, depending on experience.
